A high price to pay for a little extra profit!

On today Star, 28/5/2007, Front Page,

"RM22,500 fine for selling Milo at RM1.80"

The Star reported that a mamak restaurant owner was hit with a RM22,500 (US 6,00) compound fine for selling an Ice Milo for RM1.80 (US0.53) an extra RM0.30 more than the usual price.

That is a hell lot of heavy fine for wanting to earn an extra RM0.30 (less than Us$0.10) Not only did he got the ticket, the enforcement officer also confiscated his stock of drink and food worth RM750 (US$220) and tore down the shop's signboard. The restaurant owner had 14 days to settle the fine, according to the enforcement chief. The action was taken to deter other traders for simply increase their price.

Now that's really a big slap to traders who like to increase their good prices indiscriminately, but a RM22,500 fine for a mere RM0.30 increase for an Ice Milo that cost consumer RM1.80?

I really pity the poor restaurant owner now.
